Dust Mite Allergy FAQ
Dust Mite Allergy FAQs
What are allergens?
Allergens are substances that cause an immune system response, known as an allergic reaction when the substances themselves are otherwise harmless to the human body. Household allergens take the form of a variety of substances. Dust mites allergies and pet dander allergies are common non-food household allergens.
What are dust mites?
According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, dust mites are microscopic relatives of the spider. They live on mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets, and curtains. Dust mites feed on the flakes of skin that people and pets shed daily. They thrive in warm and humid environments.
What are the symptoms of dust mite allergies?
Allergic reactions to dust mites can manifest in many different ways, in different parts of the body, including the nose, throat, and skin.
Here’s a short list of health issues caused by dust mites (while our encasements are designed to protect your family from dust mites and other allergens, please consult your doctor if anyone in your family is experiencing any of these symptoms):
- Eye irritation (watery and red)
- Nasal irritation (runny, itchy, sneezing)
- Throat irritation (sore, hoarse)
- Breathing problems
- Skin irritation (rash, itching)
- Asthma worsening
What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are small insects that feed on human blood. They are known to infest mattresses, pillows, and bedding. While they are unrelated to dust mites, they are often talked about in comparison.
How are encasements able to stop dust mites and other allergens from harming my family?
Bedding encasements feature tightly-woven fabrics, both engineered and all-natural, that have micropores. These pores allow moisture to escape the mattress, pillow or comforter, which reduces the humidity that allows dust mites to thrive. Furthermore, these same pores are so tiny, they won’t allow allergens like dust mites and bed bugs, to pass through.
Cleanroom Bedding FAQ
Will Cleanroom Bedding encasements, with the added layer of fabric, make my bed too hot for sleeping?
No! Our tightly-woven fabrics feature micropores that allow airflow and moisture-wicking, reducing heat and humidity, all while keeping dust mites, bed bugs, and other allergens out of your pillow, mattress, and comforter. This dynamic is by design, to help you sleep better and make your bed a place where dust mites can’t thrive.
What’s the difference between Pristine® and Cotton fabrics?
We offer two high-performance fabric options for pillow, mattress, and duvet encasements. Sleep Clear™ Pristine®, by Cleanroom Bedding™, is our best-performing fabric. This high-quality polyester fabric has been technically engineered and manufactured with precision to provide the highest level of protection against bed bugs, dust mites, and common household allergens, including pet dander!
This comfortable and durable fabric is made up of tightly woven filament bundles that are inherently moisture wicking and breathable. Sleep Clear™ Pristine® encasements remain cool and comfortable all night while shielding you from allergens and other irritants, giving you the highest quality allergy bed cover possible.
While Sleep Clear™ Pristine® is our best performing fabric, we understand that many customers would like an all-natural option. For these customers, we’ve designed the uncompromising Sleep Clear™ Cotton allergy bedding.
Sleep Clear™ Cotton, by Cleanroom Bedding™, made from 100 percent combed and pre-shrunk cotton is also a high-performance barrier against dust mites, bed bugs, and common household allergens. The tightly woven fabric prevents allergens from passing through the encasements, while still allowing air and vapor penetration. This provides superior protection against allergens, without sacrificing a cool and comfortable sleeping experience.
Soft to the touch and quiet, you won’t hear any rough or crinkly noise from these encasements.
Sleep Clear™ Pristine® and Sleep Clear™ Cotton encasements are easy to care for! Simply follow the wash instructions and remember to never iron these encasements.
Are there any special care instructions for my encasements?
Sleep Clear™ encasements only need to be washed once per year or when soiled. Regularly vacuum or wipe the surface of your encasements with a damp cloth to remove allergens that have built up on the outside. It is particularly important that you follow these care instructions to maximize the effectiveness of your mattress encasements.
Allergy pillow covers may be washed more frequently than other encasements, along with your other linens, blankets, and non-encasement bedding. Use the following laundering instructions when washing any Sleep Clear™ encasements.
- Machine wash once a year, or when soiled, using hot water.
- Damp-wipe or vacuum the surface of your encasements periodically.
- Encase only clean, dry bedding.
- Wash with zipper OPEN.
- Never use fabric softeners.
- Use only non-chlorine bleach, if needed.
- Tumble dry, on low heat.
- Do not iron.

- Encasing must remain on for 18 months for bed bug protection.
